By the City / For the City: An Atlas of Possibility for the Future of New York is a 352-page compendium of the schemes and dreams that hundreds of New Yorkers and designers around the world shared in the lead-up to the first-ever Urban Design Week festival in September 2011.
In conjunction with Urban Design Week, the IfUD conducted a two-phased crowdsourcing experiment and ideas competition. In the first phase, New Yorkers were asked to identify the greatest sites of opportunity for civic improvement around the five boroughs- in the second, the Institute rallied the international design community to develop proposals for those sites.
The results of that competition are published in this Atlas, the inaugural title of a new imprint, Multi-Story Books. From Planetizen: This unique book is a collection of schemes & dreams- ideas from everyday people around the world about how New York City should evolve and grow realized by designers and architects.
Kitchen sink ideas include everything from planters hung from the back of billboards to turning unused space in Staten Island ferries into floating museums (with cocktails, of course). The Institute for Urban Design has done a wonderful job of presenting these out-of-the-box ideas in a way that can inspire tactical urbanists and professional planners to think differently.Copyright (c) Institute for Urban Design
